Education at Bunbury Mill

Design Technology Workshops;

A visit to Bunbury Mill provides the ideal opportunity to tackle the subject of Design and Technology. In this unique setting the subject comes alive for children; firstly as a result of exploring a fully working watermill, and then engaging in the making of models, based on the working mechanisms witnessed at first hand inside the Mill.

This is an all day visit, commencing at 10.00am, and finishing at 3.00pm.

We accept school groups of up to 30 in number. Where a class size exceeds this number we try to be flexible to accept one or two more, but you are requested to discuss such matters with the Warden prior to booking a visit.

The Workshop comprises two parts;

(a)        A Tour of the working watermill

(b)        The classroom sessions, which are tutor led.

The Tour of the working watermill looks at the procedures involved in flour making, utilising the power of water to operate simple, but effective, 19C machinery. There are many sights, sounds and smells to stimulate the children and several "hands on" opportunities are provided.

In the classroom the children engage in the making of models that incorporate mechanical features witnessed at work inside the Mill They work with hand tools on resistant materials,(wood strips, dowels, etc) and with simple components to make their own models which operate similarly, by mechanisms such as levers, wheels and axles, cams, pulleys or gears.

The cost for each workshop is substantially discounted by United Utilities to make it affordable to most schools. The charge is currently £150 per workshop.
